During iLASIK eye surgery, an ophthalmologist will create a flap from the epithelium of your cornea using a femtosecond laser. Your ophthalmologist will then have access to a part of your eye known as the corneal stroma. An excimer laser is then used to reshape the corneal stroma to your desired prescription.
iLASIK is very similar to traditional LASIK surgery, with the difference being that iLASIK exclusively uses lasers to create the epithelium flap, while LASIK requires using a microkeratome blade to do the same.
SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) is a type of laser eye surgery that uses a highly accurate femtosecond laser to change the shape of your cornea and create small, lens-shaped pieces inside your corneal tissue called lenticules. When your ophthalmologist removes the lenticule, your refractive error is improved.
