What is Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery is a group of different procedures, all designed to help manage and mitigate a variety of refractive errors, including myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Types of surgeries can differ depending on your eye health and what your goals are for your vision.

Laser eye surgery does not guarantee clear, 20/20 vision. Many patients may still need glasses or contact lenses to achieve their ideal vision, but most patients still claim they experience improved vision after the surgery.

Types of Surgeries We Consult

During iLASIK eye surgery, an ophthalmologist will create a flap from the epithelium of your cornea using a femtosecond laser. Your ophthalmologist will then have access to a part of your eye known as the corneal stroma. An excimer laser is then used to reshape the corneal stroma to your desired prescription.

iLASIK is very similar to traditional LASIK surgery, with the difference being that iLASIK exclusively uses lasers to create the epithelium flap, while LASIK requires using a microkeratome blade to do the same.

SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) is a type of laser eye surgery that uses a highly accurate femtosecond laser to change the shape of your cornea and create small, lens-shaped pieces inside your corneal tissue called lenticules. When your ophthalmologist removes the lenticule, your refractive error is improved.

Before the Surgery

If you’re interested in having laser eye surgery, your first step should be having a consultation with your optometrist. This consultation will include a comprehensive eye exam to help determine if your eyes are healthy enough to have laser eye surgery. If your eyes show signs of eye disease or other health risks, you may not be able to undergo surgery.

If your optometrist finds that your eyes are healthy enough for laser eye surgery and it can provide the results you’re looking for, we can help refer you to an ophthalmologist to perform the surgery.

Before going in for the surgery, your optometrist can help walk you through what kind of expectations you should have and what you may need to do to prepare. Some of these tips include:

  • Booking a few days off work or school to allow your eyes to heal
  • Not wearing contact lenses for a few days before the surgery
  • Not wearing any eye makeup to the surgery
  • Not wearing any alcohol-based perfumes, colognes, or fragrances (as alcohol can dry your eyes and affect the surgery)
  • Not wearing any clothes that could attract dust or dirt particles

After the Surgery

Following the surgery, your eye care team may have you follow a specific plan to help ensure your eyes heal properly. This plan may include:

  • Wearing specialty sunglasses to manage light sensitivity
  • Prescribing eye drops to mitigate discomfort
  • Booking a series of follow-up appointments to monitor how your eyes are healing
